1851 Windsor, GB10d embossed to Gibraltar, via France and Spain



Letter from Windsor to Gibraltar, Sir James Cochrane, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Gibraltar. One of the most notable cases he handled was the enquiry into the Mary Celeste.

Gibraltar none
Rate:- UK To Gibraltar via France, compulsory payment of ten pence for up to a quarter ounce from2 1st June 1843 to3 23rd March 1854. Five pence was for the GPO and five pence for the French Post Office. This only paid the postage to the Franco –Hispanic exchange office at Irun.
Spain From4 16th November 1807 and confirmed5 on 4th September 1815 to6 28th June 1853 the rate charged on mail to the Andalucia Baja region of Spain was 11 reales for a letter weighing up to six adarmes. Since the Spanish Post Office treated Gibraltar as if it was a sub office of San Roque, the same rate applied.
